Pregnancy is a rollercoaster — full of change, emotion, and uncertainty. As midwives, we are privileged to walk alongside women during one of the most life-changing times in their lives. We know how deeply personal and different every pregnancy can be. We also know it’s not always easy.
Some symptoms during pregnancy are uncomfortable but expected — nausea, fatigue, heartburn, swelling. These are part of the journey, and we’re here to help you manage them. But other symptoms may point to something more serious: pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, infections, or other complications that need quick attention. And that’s where things can get difficult.
Because we can’t help with what we don’t know.
We sometimes meet women who wait too long to speak up, or who quietly put up with troubling symptoms because they’re unsure if they’re “normal” or worth mentioning. Others don’t know where to seek help, or assume everything will sort itself out.
Let me be clear:
You are never wasting our time.
You are never being dramatic.
You are never a burden.
We want to hear what you’re feeling — all of it. Even if it’s just a “gut feeling” that something’s not right. The earlier we know, the more we can do to help you and your baby stay safe and well.
We are a team — and that team starts with you.
As your midwives, we are friendly, kind, supportive, and eager to help. But we are not mind readers. We rely on you to tell us what’s going on. That means keeping up with appointments, learning which symptoms need urgent attention, and reaching out when you’re unsure. No question is too small. No worry is too silly.
Your voice is one of the most important tools in your pregnancy care. Please use it.
Together, with open communication and mutual trust, we can make sure you have a safe, informed, and supported pregnancy — every step of the way.
To find out who to call in an pregnancy emergency, ask your Midwife or Gp or alternatively google "maternity triage dept in (x) area". Save this number in yours & your birth partner's phone, for when you need it!
