Service Description
Please email to enquire about availability. (Even if it looks like there's no availability we will find you a spot!) The available topics to discuss are split into 4 sections. Topic 1: labour and birth • How to know you are in labour • What to do when you are in labour • We go through what a normal labour ending in vaginal birth will entail. We will discuss birth choices and explore the possibility of every choice available. • There is also special attention paid to the “what if’s” that surround childbirth. For example, a forceps birth/c-section/neonatal care admission. I will give you practical tips on how to cope with this and reassure you that these outcomes don’t have to impact on your mental or physical health. • The role of the birthing partner is always discussed at each topic – it is about both of you! Topic 2: Coping during labour • So, now you know what is involved in labour and birth, I will inform you of all your options regarding coping strategies and pain relief. I teach breathing and pushing techniques that you could use for the birth. • We discuss the benefits and disadvantages of all the pain relief choices during a very honest and open chat. I will help you find the right forms of pain relief for you (if that is what you choose). Topic 2: Feeding baby • I will explain (and demonstrate with props) colostrum harvesting and breastfeeding. We discuss positioning and attachment in depth, with supporting literature to help you remember in the future. I also discuss artificial feeding and the use of teets. • Of course, it may not always go to plan. So fear not, I cover everything you will need to know if you face any issues and what to do if/when this happens. • This session is so relaxed and there is absolutely no judgement. You feed your baby however you prefer. An informed choice is the best one! Topic 4: Baby and Mum postnatal care: The last week is about the immediate postnatal period for you and your baby. The topics covered are: • Feeding • Thermoregulation and clothing baby • Nappy changing • Bathing • Safe sleeping • The role of the community midwife • How to look after yourself and what to look out for • How to take care of your mental health (including signs of postnatal depression) How it works: In one hour we can cover one topic. In two hours we can cover two topics. Etc… These sessions can be split up into one hour sessions or two hours sessions max (over a number of days or weeks).
